Active Release Technique is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fascitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T. Dr. Leahy is the founder of A.R.T., and it has progressed as the standard of care for soft tissue injuries. Dr. Leahy, as well as myself have used it on many athletes, both amateur and professional, they athletes are finding that with a few treatments they could get excellent recovery from shoulder, spine, thigh, and ankle injuries--and avoid surgery. An event took place in 1990 that elevated the status of A.R.T. treatments. A medical director of a large occupational clinic invited Dr. Leahy to speak at a doctors' staffing meeting. They wanted him to talk about carpal tunnel syndrome. Halfway through the meeting he was amazed to find the frustration that many of the doctors had in relieving carpal tunnel symptoms. Dr. Leahy up to that point had treated several and had great results within just a few visits and hadn't thought twice about it. He saw an opportunity, and asked them for their 5 worst carpal tunnel patients. The doctors smiled and skeptically gave Dr. Leahy the files of the 5 worst carpal tunnel patients they had. All of them had been under treatment for at least 2 years. Three had experienced at least one surgery and all of them were adversely affected at work. The results: All 5 cases were resolved in 3 visits. They all returned to full time, pain-free duties at work. Dr. Leahy is able to consistently resolve over 90% of his patients' problems. he now teaches and certifies health care providers all over the world to use A.R.T. The conditions treated with A.R.T. all have one thing in common: they often result from injury to over-used muscles. Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways: 1) Acute injuries (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.), 2) Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma), and not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia). Each of these factors can cause your body to produce touch, dense scar tissue in the affected areas. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to moved freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause a reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness. Every A.R.T. session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The A.R.T. provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols (over 500 specific moves) are unique to A.R.T. They allow providers to identify and correct specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. It is such a powerful tool, that I have become a certified A.R.T. provider.
