STANDARD PROCESS!

What you need to know about supplements and whole food nutrition.

Welcome! My name is Dr. Chris Montanaro. I am a chiropractor and Applied Kinesiologist in Liverpool, NY.  This information is meant for patient education purposes only. It’s loaded with great information, however, it is in no way intended, directly or indirectly, for diagnosis or treatment purposes. Please enjoy the information as it should enlighten you about taking control of your own health so that you can optimize your health and actualize your greatest potential.

Dr. Royal Lee stated back in 1951 “one of the biggest tragedies of human civilization is the procedure of chemical therapy over nutrition. It’s a substitution of artificial therapy over natural, of poisons over food, in which we are feeding people poison in trying to correct the reactions of starvation.” “One of the biggest mistakes medical science has ever done is to provide drugs to people who are starving.”

Take vitamin C for example. True vitamin C is a complex of several parts that make up the whole….every vitamin is a complex. There is nothing simple about vitamin C, or any vitamin for that matter. Back in 1938 a Hungarian Dr. won the Nobel Prize for the discovery of Ascorbic acid and labeled it Vitamin C. Everyone was excited and it was mass produced. It is because of this event, that Vitamin C is a very misunderstood vitamin. The government is partially responsible for this continued misconception, because they have decided that you rate any Vitamin C product according to the amount of ascorbic acid it contains. Ascorbic acid is an antioxidant and the most bulky part of the Vitamin C complex. It is the preservative of the vitamin C complex. A few months after his initial findings the Hungarian doctor discovered he could give as much ascorbic acid as possible to rats with scurvy and they wouldn’t get any better. He was puzzled, but found that he could give them just a couple of teaspoons of lemon or lime juice and within a couple weeks the scurvy would be cured. The rats were cured because there is a lot more to the vitamin C complex than ascorbic acid. The ascorbic acid is like the banana peel. A part of the banana, the covering, but certainly not the whole thing. Unfortunately this additional information was dismissed. The companies that had already started the cheap mass production of ascorbic acid labeled it as Vitamin C. In the infinite wisdom of the chemists, they have concentrated synthetic ascorbic acid into super high dosages…..500 mg or 1000 mg. This is like trying to give someone 1000 tires and saying it’s a car. Well, tires are great, but wouldn’t it be nice to have one well functioning car instead of a lot of pieces. You can do something with a car. It’s functional. This is the same as all of the complexes of vitamins in the body. They are functional living complexes. Not dead, inactive fractions and bits and pieces of vitamins. It’s like the chemist saying that any old hunk brass is a watch. The watch is a complex structure just like the car. What part of the watch tells time? No part does….its the complex interaction of all the parts that makes it work. It’s no different with the vitamin complexes. They are complex and not simple at all, and you need all the parts to function properly.

To refine out or to synthesize the preservative, in our opinion, is a mistake. The real vitamin C complex contains the vitamin P factors. These are the permeability factors…(the bioflavinoids and rutin) which maintain vascular integrity. This is why the Hungarian doctor couldn’t cure the rats with scurvy by using ascorbic acid. The P factors are deficient in people who bruise easily or have a symptom called “pink toothbrush.” People deficient in the Vitamin C complex have blood vessels that rupture and bleed too easily. This can happen in the eyes of diabetics, the bruising of skin for no apparent reason, or hemorrhaging of the organs. The P factors strengthen the vascular system. Vitamin K is another part of the Vitamin C complex. It promotes prothrombin. It helps in coagulation, which means….if you have a cut, it helps to lay down the platelets that stop the bleeding and start the formation of scar tissue to heal your wound. If you have enough vitamin K, it’s used in the formation of protein, which is then transported to the injured tissue. Another factor in the C complex is vitamin J. The J factor is the part of the C complex which increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. If you have a cold, you want to get oxygen to your tissues where it oxidizes the toxins and carries them off with carbon dioxide. In addition to these, the C complex contains enzymes, the outstanding one being tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is an organic copper, an adrenal activator. If you want to rate vitamin C according to one factor it would be logical to rate tyrosinase. It was actually discovered by Dr. Fazio at Johns Hopkins in 1932. Dr. Fazio was at the time the leading endocrinologist in the country. Now, as we cook most of our foods…the enzymes are easily destroyed, especially the tyrosinase in the C complex. This is why Standard process goes to extreme lengths to make sure the temperatures remain low enough, as to not destroy the most important parts of the complexes of vitamins and minerals.

So you may ask…where do I get the whole Vitamin C complex. Well wouldn’t you know….that mother nature… already provides all of the complexes of vitamins in naturally occurring whole foods like fruits and vegetables. The nutrients are also conveniently in the perfect proportions to be optimally utilized by your body. This is why Standard Process is the one of the most incredible whole food nutritional companies around. They make their Vitamin C complex by removing the water and fiber from raw, whole foods – like alfalfa, mushrooms, and buckwheat leaf. This leaves a powder containing the nutrients from these foods in their entirety.

Let me ask you a question. What do you think is better for you… The vitamin C complex obtained from the careful growing and harvesting of organic crops, and extracting the vital nutrients without destroying the living complex, or obtaining vitamin C by refining and chemically changing corn sugar to make super high dosages of ascorbic acid? I would have to say hands down the organically grown food product is much healthier and a safer way to go. Sugar is cheap and is abundant. Certainly it’s a lot cheaper for the manufacturer to mass produce dead and devitalized ascorbic acid. This is what you typically get when you walk into the store and see several bottles of so called vitamin C. The American public has been led to believe that more is better so you pick up a bottle with 1000 mg of ascorbic acid thinking it is superior to the rest. To add gas to the fire, the word organic is a trendy term that is being used pretty freely these days. According to the government, as long as a product has carbon atoms in it, it can be legally labeled organic. Sugar, by nature, is made up of mostly carbon. This is organic chemistry lab wizardry, just like the synthetic ascorbic acid. The manufacturing companies are playing a game of words when they label their products organic or natural. For example the packaging might state “organic” but in no way means the product was grown organically. This is a far cry from how the term organic is implied to the consumer who usually understands organic to mean – grown and harvested without chemical fertilizers or without pesticides or herbicides. To be certified 100% organic and therefore 100% natural, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides should be introduced in any way for a period of several years. I guarantee this is not what you’re getting with most products on the store shelves today. If you don’t have the knowledge of how products are really made, then you are led to believe you are supplementing with a product that is from the whole food source, grown in organic fields. This is unfortunately not the case. Synthetic vitamins are not vitamins - they are drugs…they are safer drugs, but drugs nonetheless.

Scientists like to take things apart to see how they work. Once they identify which vitamin in a particular food affects a specific function, they think it is the ONLY part you need. They assume that the isolated nutrient works the same way when it’s no longer a part of the whole-food complex. Well…they don’t. And to add to it….there are tons of nutrients in whole foods that haven’t been identified or researched. Therefore, we as humans cannot understand, and hence manipulate, the complexities that mother nature has provided.

So does your body still need the other bits and pieces of the complexes? Of course the answer is yes. What happens when you supplement with synthetic pieces of the whole complex? In order for your body to utilize these pieces it will pull from its reserves to make up the rest of the complex. Then you will often get a drug like affect from the synthetics….. but days, weeks, months or sometimes even years later you will have depleted the nutrient stores in your body and end up worse off than when you started taking your synthetic vitamins - and actually create nutritional deficiencies. Ascorbic acid will cause a vitamin C complex deficiency. Do you ever wonder why the ascorbic acid you were taking for your cold didn’t help at all? The Real vitamin C complex should break a fever in a short time span and help with that cold. Even individuals with severe infections will continue fighting the infection as long as they have enough of the whole C complex.

Standard Process goes to tremendous lengths to provide the finest whole food supplements available today. They are the founders of whole food nutrition supplements -dating back to the 1920’s - and everything is compared to them as being the gold standard of whole food nutrition.

Consider the following: This is a fun analogy made by Dr. Janet Lang, which does a great job of driving the point home. She says, “Do you know of any other industry, other than the health care industry, that says with a straight face and gets away with it 1) The quality of the materials that go into building our products are irrelevant, and 2) The quality of the materials that are used to maintain the operation of our products are also irrelevant. If we consider the human body as the product of the health care industry, this is certainly the idea that is being conveyed to all of us.. What if…The Airline Industry has decided, that if this approach works for the Health Care Industry, then they should follow suit. They build the aircraft from scrap metal and various other parts from the junk yard. They are serviced whenever the Industry gets around to it with similar junk yard materials. When the jets constantly malfunction and crash, the Airline Industry runs elaborate and costly diagnostic tests and procedures, and discovers all kinds of things that aren’t working right. When warning lights light up the cockpit, duct tape is applied over them to “cure” the disorder. But never, ever are the qualities and properties of the materials used to build and maintain the planes evaluated. If anyone in the industry brings up the subject of evaluating the building materials, they’re called quacks, and told that such alternative approaches are unproven. When the jets crash and burn, and kills people (and of course they will), the Airline Industry still refuses to talk about the materials used to build their aircraft, because they learned from the Health Care Industry that is just doesn’t matter. The bottom line is that we all have to take more control of our health and our health care and not get lost in the matrix of sickness care. If you figure out why and how you got to the current level of health or lack their of, we can change the stimuli that was causing it in the first place, and then give the body the vital building blocks and nutrition it needs to heal itself.

All of the structures and functions of the human body are built from and run on nutrients. ALL OF THEM. And nutrients are obtained from what we eat. Good old mother nature again. And, every moment of every day, cells, tissues and organs and thousands and thousands of biochemical messengers (like enzymes, neurotransmitters and hormones) are being produced, broken down and rebuilt. In 3 months all of the blood in your body is new. In 7 years every cell in your body is new, and you will have a 100% different body. So wouldn’t it make sense to rebuild your body with the right building blocks? Then your body has a chance to heal itself and you can experience a happy, healthy, vibrant and energetic life. One of my mentors, Dr. Charles, taught me that any condition or disease the body has created and manifested, the body can heal….if you change the proper stimulus, and give the body the essential building blocks with which to build a healthy body. It just makes perfect sense.

The conventional health care industry does not consider it worth talking about the quality of the materials used in this perceptual recycling of the human body. We are led to believe that any old thing will do, as long as it is within the broad outline of the infamous food pyramid. When you process a food for eternal shelf life, you take out all of the nutrients (the living part of food) and spray back a few poisons, and then say it has nothing to do with healthcare, I think it is a crime. In fact, the composition of the body is largely water, with the solid portions about ¾ protein and ¼ fat, several pounds of minerals and tiny, tiny amounts of carbohydrates……You Do The Math on what you should be eating and putting into your body. Going to the junk yard (junk food, processed packaged devitalized food, chemical imitation fractions of nutrients, indigestible mineral supplements) … we are using these things for rebuilding strong, enduring, stress handling, effective, healthy bodies. Unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way.

Many of my patients come in with bags full of supplements that they have tried in the past. Most all of them are synthetic fraction of vitamins. I always ask them if the supplements helped (obviously not, because they are in my office needing help). They are frustrated with how much money they have spent and wasted. Trust me, I understand their pain. Dr. Goodheart always says “If you keep doing the same thing over and over without getting the results you want, THAT AIN’T IT. Let me ask you this? Is what you are doing for yourself working for you? Before you answer this I can’t tell you the number of times someone has come into the office saying yeah “I feel great” and then check off on the symptoms survey: Upset stomach, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, subject to colds and flus, fatigued, headaches, insomnia, depression, craving sweets, acne, gassy bowels, increased weight, mental sluggishness, high cholesterol, thyroid problems, weak nails, hair is falling out course or thinning, arthritic tendencies, allergies, anxiety, menstrual pain, hot flashes, and on and on and on. Not all of them are checked for one person, but usually several are checked and these are the people saying they feel good. People have gotten too accustomed to putting up with their ailments or don’t know what to do about them. Many times people are surprised that certain health issues, such as PMS or osteoporosis, are not normal.  These, like many conditions, are considered normal because of how common they are. Symptoms including poor skin, weak nails, or coarse and thinning hair are some of the first indicators of nutritional deficiencies in the body. Your body considers these things not as important as other functions, and will direct more of its efforts to other more important functions ….For example the body will do everything it can to keep the blood chemistry normal. Blood tests are very effective diagnostic tools, however, at the point when something shows up in the blood, your overall health is dramatically decreased. Many times this could have been rectified sooner if initial indicators were understood.

Sometimes nutritional deficiencies are hard to spot at first, perhaps because initial indicators go un-noticed or are not tested for. It’s not until you are over run with symptoms that you want to do anything about it. There are 3 ways to go about taking care of those symptoms. 1) You have Symptom A and you take a prescription drug to get rid of it…..not really fixing the underlying problem. 2) You have symptom A and you take synthetic nutraceutical supplements, which again do a great job at covering up the symptoms and not fixing the problem. And finally 3) you have symptom A and then you figure out why you have symptom A and make changes to rectify it. Stop doing the things that caused it in the first place and provide the building blocks for your body to heal itself.  Givien an individualized health analysis, which we will talk about later, we help you to discover the underlying causes of your health concerns, so that we can design a program suited to best fit your needs.

It is an unfortunate fact that we would have to eat 80 cups of spinach to equal the nutritional value of what one cup of spinach would have provided 100 years ago. The nutrient values in even our quote unquote “good food” isn’t all that good. Today’s farming methods have eroded the soil and stripped it of its mineral content. Though they might add chemical fertilizers containing Nitrogen, and Phosphorus for the plant to grow, this in no way returns the dozens of minerals or other components for the plants to contain proper nutrients for the body. At some point supplementing with whole food supplementation is a necessity. You couldn’t eat enough whole foods to get all of the nutrition your body needs to rebuild itself. And that’s for people who are eating all the right things. Imagine what your body needs if your diet consist of ho ho’s, and cup cakes and ding dongs. Imagine the health of a body consuming those things for an extended period of time. It wouldn’t look good. Here is some homework for you. Buy some Twinkies and put them on your shelf and see how long they last. I bet they’ll outlive you. Real…live whole foods are perishable. Living food complexes go bad quickly, because the molds and bacteria see that there is something worth eating that can sustain life. Nothing in a Twinkie can sustain life.

Did you know that most of the nutrition in flour is destroyed during the production of white flour, which is in most things these days? After whole wheat is ground, it is bleached with chlorine dioxide. Most of the nutrition is gone and then a few synthetic fractions of vitamins are put back in. The reason this is done is to allow for a long enough shelf life for you to buy and consume the grain products. This comes at a great cost to your health though. There is so much evidence of the correlation between heart disease and white flour that Dr. Lee remarked, “we might as well remove the term heart disease and supplant it with the term white flour disease.” Unfortunately you can do the same thing for a wide variety of disease including some of the biggest killers of our day, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, and slower killers like chronic fatigue, arthritis and degenerative diseases.

There are lots of problems with synthetic vitamins that are not from whole foods. 1) synthetic vitamins actually cause nutritional deficiencies. 2) synthetic vitamins don’t just pass through the body; the body has to process them. Since they are processed by the body, they can be harmful.

A third problem is that rather than working like a true nutrient synthetic vitamins actually work like a stimulant. That’s why some people experience a “rush” when taking synthetic vitamins. An analogy to that would be whipping a tired horse. Of course you can get the horse to run faster for a little while, however, at some point he’ll fall over.

Another problem is that most vitamins on the market claiming to be natural only have to be 10% natural to make that claim. The worst part is that when synthetic vitamins are produced in a chemistry lab, they are mirror images of the real thing….meaning the exact opposite. And lots of times you get the opposite effect of what you were hoping for.

So what about minerals? Both animals and people need minerals to survive. Because of mineral deficiencies in the soils, many people today are deficient in minerals. Patients often bring in bottles of colloidal minerals, a poor source of utilizable minerals.  I think this will be easy to explain with a little common sense. Have you ever, in your entire existence heard of someone who gnawed on a rock for any nutritional purposes whatsoever. I sure haven’t, so I’m guessing you haven’t either. There is a real difference between the minerals in a rock, and the live minerals found in whole foods. Again, mother nature knew what she was doing to provide us the nutrition we need to function at our best. The best way for our body to intake minerals is when they are chelated (meaning attached to an amino acid) - which is not done in colloidal minerals. Chelation is necessary for proper absorption and utilization to occur, and mother nature does it for us. The plant synthesizes the inorganic minerals from soil to the organic form - which is exactly what your body needs.

Here is an incredible story exemplifying the power of natural whole-food supplements versus the dangers of synthetics. Dr. Royal Lee introduced a multiple vitamin he named Catalyn in 1929. He began distributing it to doctors and patients, and the response to the product was tremendous. Doctors and patients not only wanted more Catalyn, but they also wanted more products. Dr. Lee did not want to be in the supplements business; he was an engineer and an inventor.

He took his blossoming vitamin company to two drug companies, both of whom were also developing their own so called “vitamin” products. Dr. Lee offered to “give” them everything – the farms, the equipment, the patents, and the processing techniques. One company rejected the offer, and the other decided to test Dr. Lee’s Catalyn product against their own products first.

The company took three groups of lab animals and starved them half to death. One group was then fed nothing, the second group was given Catalyn, and the third group was given the company’s chemical vitamins.

In the first 30 days, all of the animals in the first group that were fed nothing, died, which makes sense. The animals in the Catalyn group improved 25%. The animals in the chemical vitamin group improved 50%. In the next 30 days (60 days in total), the animals in the Catalyn group improved another 25%, while the animals in the chemical vitamin group improved to nearly 100% - almost fully recovered.

During the following 30 days the animals in the Catalyn group continued to improved another 25%, while the health of the animals in the chemical vitamin group deteriorated and all died by the end of 90 days.

This goes to show that a living organism feed nutrients in an unnatural ratio actually causes imbalances and deficiencies, leading eventually to disease and death.

The drug company was amazed at the results. They decided to evaluate what it would cost to manufacture Dr. Lee’s products – owning, operating, and maintaining the farms and factory, and what their profits could be.

To make a large bottle of Catalyn, it takes 25 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables. In order for them to maintain their customary profit margin, they would have to sell Catalyn at $30 a bottle (in 1929 dollars). Because this was far too expensive, they rejected Dr. Lees offer. Instead Dr. Lee introduced and his new company Standard process in1929 and sold Catalyn at a cost of $6 a bottle. More than 75 years later a small bottle retails for only $9.00. The best part is that I and many other doctors have helped thousands of our patient’s regain their health using whole-food nutrition.

When comparing whole food supplements to drugs….keep in mind that even properly prescribed drugs kill over 100,000 people a year. Whole food supplements are so awesome because its just that, food. Its stuff the body is supposed to get. You could take a whole bottle of Catalyn for example and you would be fine….it would just be expensive if you did that everyday.

Another thing to keep in mind is being careful about looking into the research. For example, recent studies show that taking vitamin E increases the risk of heart attacks. First of all, these studies were using synthetic alpha tocopherol, which is just one of the seven tocopherols in the living vitamin E complex. In fact all the tocopherols are the antioxidant protectors, which cover the many more parts that make up the entire complex. All of the research was done on this one part of a synthetic vitamin. After the last example caused disease and death in the lab animals….there is no wonder why the research concluded bad things about synthetic alpha tocopherol. Synthetic or man made vitamins are toxic and may cause many adverse reactions, some as serious as sterility or even death. But, more importantly, synthetic or isolated vitamins NEVER fix the original deficiency in the first place. Health professionals are not using whole-food supplements to inject a zillion milligrams of a certain nutrient into the body for a drug-like effect. We use them for the food complexes that are missing in today’s devitalized diets. We try to bring balance back to your body, and give it the building blocks to restore health. Giving these whole food complexes are where the powerful healing effects take place. Your body knows what to do with them and it heals itself naturally….the way it was designed to heal itself.

So now that you are better educated about what you need to optimize your health and actualize your highest potential, what about the expense. Americans spend more money on potato chips than they do on supplements. People will always say….oh those vitamin people only want your money. But you never hear them say….oh those soda pop people only want your money. If fact soda is totally junk and people don’t baulk about it. We need to have a major paradigm shift in our society. One soda will suppress your immune system for about 6 hours. Why not start this shift now and bring health into your life. Ditch some of the junk and you’ll have plenty to invest in your health. Without a doubt it costs money to stay healthy. There is no way around it. Its not cheaper to eat better or healthier, but it is still worth it. It must be thought of as an investment in your health. I promise you it’ll be more expensive in the long run to deal with complicated health issues and trying to take care of them with expensive drugs and surgery.  Wouldn’t you rather invest in your health now, and not have to deal with illness and disease later in life?

Results are very important to me and the many doctors out there trying to help their patients. I can’t afford not to have the best products to work with when it comes to results. My patients expect and demand results, as they should.

Another reason that the Standard Process line is so incredible is because of its use of protomorphogens. These are obtained from animal products, where they extract the DNA template from a particular organ, allowing your body to use it as a blueprint for rebuilding specific organs in the body. When they take these whole food nutrients and put them together with these blueprints, it can be traced to the organ that it was meant to support. The organ substances really act as a guidance system for the whole food nutrition to go where it is needed. The nutrients are bound to the blueprint guidance system and this is why they are so effective. Throughout history many societies have consumed the entire animal including organs, tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones. Wouldn’t it make sense that the nutrition your organs and bones need come from organs and bones. Dr. Lee understood this, and used protomorphogens, to make effective products.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the needs of people’s individual bodies are different. Trying to just take any old thing to restore health is like shooting a clay pigeon with a blindfold on. You need the help and guidance of a trained health professional to put together a quality individualized program to suit your specific needs. There are all sorts of ways to help in the process. I use muscle testing from my background in Applied Kinesiology and Nutrition Response Testing, BioMeridian testing, Heart Rate Variability tests and the clinical knowledge from my own office and from some of the most successful healers in the country, who have helped thousands of people, restore their health. As a certified Applied Kinesiologist, my job is to use whatever means is necessary to restore your health without the use of drugs and surgery. The Biomeridian is a piece of cutting edge equipment used to analyze the energetic health of all of the organs and systems in the body. The heart rate variability testing assesses how your nervous system and cardiovascular system handles stress and its ability, or lack thereof to recuperate and regenerate itself. The combination of these tools are an objective and powerful means to be able to track your progress and restoration of health. I’m really excited to be able provide this quality or service to all of my family and patients.

These products are specifically designed to provide optimal nutritional support for dogs and cats.

In order to produce high-quality supplements, our products undergo a unique process. To ensure the utmost quality, many of our raw materials are grown organically on company-owned farmland and then processed utilizing exclusive manufacturing techniques. We monitor our raw materials throughout the entire manufacturing process using continuous quality control testing.

History

Dr. Royal Lee, D.D.S, founded Standard Process in 1929. Raised on a farm near Dodgeville, Wisconsin, his interest in science and nutrition began early at the local elementary school. At age 12, he compiled a notebook of definitions on biochemistry and nutrition, and he began collecting books on these subjects. What started as a hobby continued throughout his lifetime to eventually become part of the Dr. Royal Lee Memorial Library.

Dr. Lee graduated in 1924 from Marquette University Dental School in Wisconsin. While attending the university, the importance of nutrition became a major interest of his. A paper he prepared in 1923 outlined the relationship of vitamin deficiency to tooth decay and showed the necessity of vitamins in the diet. His research led to the development of CATALYN®, a vitamin concentrate derived from natural sources. Introduced in 1929, CATALYN became the nucleus of a complete line of nutritional supplements at the Vitamin Products Company.

Dr. Lee believed the key to maintaining the quality of nutritional supplements was a unique manufacturing process. He designed high-vacuum, low-temperature drying equipment to preserve the maximum nutrients of the whole foods. These technologies continue to be used today.

From a small two-room facility, the Vitamin Products Company has evolved into the present company we call Standard Process Inc. in Palmyra, Wisconsin. Standard Process is still family-owned and operated. The company is continually growing, building on expert research and quality manufacturing first imposed by Dr. Lee.

"Whole food nutrition begins with sun, water, and fertile soil." - Dr. Royal Lee

The Standard Process Greenhouse in Palmyra Quality Begins with a Healthy Harvest
The Kettle Moraine basin of Wisconsin contains rich black soil laden with minerals and nutrients. It is here, on company-owned, certified organic farmland, that we grow strong, vital plants that are used as the raw materials in our whole food supplements. We organically grow the following crops regularly:
bulletAlfalfa
bulletBeets
bulletSpanish Black Radish
bulletBrussels Sprouts
bulletBuckwheat
bulletCarrots
bulletKidney Beans
bulletPea Vine
bulletOats

Each year, we rotate the crops we grow and adjust the acreage for each crop based on the estimated needs of the main production facility.

The Standard Process farm at daybreak Organic Farming Methods
Nature has provided the foundation, and we use organic farming practices to ensure that the quality of our farmland is maintained for years to come. In accordance with our certification, we follow strict organic guidelines to grow our crops, keeping detailed records of our farming practices. Our farmland is monitored annually by certifying agencies to ensure that only the highest quality farming practices are taking place.

Seeds
Most seed is planted directly in the field, but some plants get started in the greenhouse located at our facility before being transplanted into the field.

Irrigation
Irrigation water is supplied from a naturally occurring artesian flowage over five hundred feet below the farm's surface.

Weed Control
Organic weed control standards are strictly adhered to at the Standard Process Farm. The main methods of weed management include: cultivating, mowing, hand weeding, and cover crops - used for weed prevention and as a source of nitrogen and organic matter.

In addition, we utilize a crop flamer, a tool employed by the organic community to control weeds that come up between the crop rows before vegetables have a chance to canopy. New technology will allow us to continually improve our efforts of weed management.

SP Farm workers tending the land
Eco-sensitive Manufacturing
After the nutrients have been extracted from the raw materials, the majority of biodegradable by-products are returned to the fields in a monitored, land-spreading program. By doing this, we keep unnecessary wastes out of landfills and put natural nutrition back into the soil to be utilized by crops in the following years.

Isolated Farmland
Since our farm is surrounded on all sides by organic buffers, our crops are isolated from other non-agricultural land and chemical inputs from traditional farming practices. This has been key to our organic status and success.

Manufacturing

Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process, said, "Whole foods are the best natural source of vitamins. The key to the highest quality is the manufacturing process." At Standard Process, we are involved from the moment a seed is planted through shipping the finished product to your door.

Because preserving the whole food complex is a top priority when manufacturing our supplements, we carefully follow time-proven formulas based on Dr. Lee's philosophies. Our manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished product, takes an average of six weeks. Throughout the process, raw materials are handled in a carefully controlled environment and continually tested for quality.

Exclusive Manufacturing Processes
In order to produce the highest quality whole food supplements, Standard Process utilizes the following processes to manufacture its products. Each process is custom engineered to preserve the nutrients of the raw materials.

Grinding
Whole foods grown on our certified organic farmland, such as Brussels sprouts and carrots, are harvested and then carefully ground.

Juice Extraction
To capture the nutrients from raw materials (such as buckwheat, alfalfa, and peas), the juice is pressed from the plants and separated from the pulp. Since conventional water-separating methods do not always retain the valuable fat-soluble nutrients found in food, we utilize a separating process to extract all the liquids, not just the water fraction. The result is a concentrated product laden with both fat- and water-soluble nutrients.

Separation Process
Selected specific animal tissues used to make our Protomorphogen™ and Cytosol™ extracts are ground to create a liquid slurry. The slurry is subjected to our exclusive multistep separation methods to obtain the cell determinants and cytosolic fractions, respectively. Animal tissues are obtained exclusively from USDA certified facilities.

Low-Temperature, High-Vacuum Dryers
Raw materials are slowly dried in our exclusive, low-temperature, high-vacuum dryers to preserve the nutrients in them.

Continuing the Process

Mixing
Dried materials are measured and mixed with the utmost precision. Because of the variability in sources of natural and organic ingredients, color and odor may vary from batch to batch. However, the basic formula remains constant, and quality is ensured by repeat testing.

Binding
Only natural binding ingredients, such as honey and arabic gum, are used in our tablet manufacturing process. Cellulose is often used to give body to the powders. Calcium stearate, derived from vegetable sources, is used as a lubricant in our tablet machines. No artificial flavoring is ever used.

Tablets, Capsules, and Powders
Our whole food supplements are offered in several forms of delivery. The three most common are tablets, capsules, and powders.

Tablets
One of the tablet presses used by Standard Process is computer monitored and measures the weight, density, and thickness of the tablets. This allows for high volume production without sacrificing quality control in the manufacturing process. Currently, our tableting department yields close to 90 products. All of our finished tablets are routinely analyzed for content to ensure that label claims are accurate.

Capsules
High-tech computers monitor our capsuling machines to ensure that precise amounts of product are measured and enclosed in our natural gelatin capsules. One of the capsule machines used by Standard Process has an internal computer system that is programmed for the specifications of each product, and it ejects defective capsules. The capsuling department currently produces nearly 50 products through the use of 4 capsule machines.

Powders
In order to fill our powder formulas, Standard Process uses a computer-controlled digitronic filler. This system achieves very accurate fills and provides a highly consistent product from batch to batch.

Packaging
The final product is sealed in amber glass bottles. The color of the glass helps protect the food's nutrients from damaging light, while the sealed bottle helps prevent product oxidation. Induction lids and bottleneck seals protect against product tampering. The bottled product is then labeled and packaged in cardboard boxes for easy storage, protection, and shipping.

Quality Control

Quality is our Tradition
Quality is an integral part of every step in our process. Our whole food supplements meet and exceed the most demanding quality standards. We follow Good Manufacturing Practices, which were written specifically for the dietary supplement industry.

Our quality control methods ensure that the foods that eventually become Standard Process supplements are rich in nutrients and synergistic micronutrients. Testing throughout our manufacturing process enables us to maintain critical processing control points to ensure quality and safety.

Normally, a product is tested between six and eight times throughout the manufacturing process. Every week, trained scientists in our full-scale microbiology and chemistry laboratories perform as many as 400 tests on raw materials, product batches, and finished products. We use testing procedures approved by the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC).

Standard Process takes great pride in its quality assurance program. Our team of trained microbiologists and chemists work hard to guarantee our customers receive the best quality products on the market today.

Testing Stage One
Before anything is grown or processed at our local farm, we test the mineral and nutrient levels of the soil. Our quality standards demand that the soil be rich in minerals and humus. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are ever used in the organic growing process.

Testing Stage Two
Before the manufacturing process begins, scientists in our microbiology laboratory sample and test raw materials that will be used in our whole food supplements.

Testing Stage Three
Standard Process' chemists perform assays on all raw materials and product batches to determine the vitamin and mineral content. These assays guarantee that our label claims are accurate and that maximum nutrition is being delivered.

Testing Stage Four
After the tableting and bottling process, physical tests are performed on the products. Tablets are monitored for hardness, size, weight, moisture, and water activity. Hardness and moisture testing ensures that tablets remain intact throughout the packaging and shipping process. Disintegration tests are run on tablets to make sure they dissolve within the USP time specification. This ensures that the patient will be able to digest and absorb the nutrients quickly and easily. Powders and capsules are monitored for moisture and consistency. The weight of all products is tested to guarantee that label claims are met.

Research and Development

Dr. Royal Lee believed in the value of scientifically researched, whole food nutritional supplements. He field tested his unique nutritional supplements and endorsed and supported clinical evaluations of them by others. Input from health care professionals enabled him to enhance and perfect the health benefits of Standard Process products.

Building for the Future
Standard Process is dedicated to continuing Dr. Lee's Research and Development practices by applying 21st century technology and expertise to his founding principles. We combine the evaluation of current scientific research and Dr. Lee's insights and teachings with applied clinical research in our Research & Development department.

Our Research & Development department consists of skilled, professionally trained, degreed scientists who work to provide a solid scientific basis for the safe and effective use of high-quality supplements, herbs, and other natural products for health care professionals.

Types of Research
Our scientists' goal is to gain a detailed understanding of the underlying biochemical components, physiological activities, and population health applications of whole food supplements. Our scientists meet this goal by performing basic, clinical, and outcomes research.

Basic Research
Basic research is utilized to identify and quantify key chemical markers within whole food ingredients and analyze them throughout the manufacturing process. Using plants grown in experimental test plots at our farm, our scientists determine which plant varieties will survive and grow in our climate. This helps us evaluate the potency of individual nutrients in our raw materials. The basic research that is performed in our Research and Development department assures us that the nutritional integrity and maximum synergistic capacity of the final product is maintained.

Clinical Research
In addition to basic research, Standard Process also focuses on clinical research. This research is primarily conducted through collaborative relationships with major conventional and complementary research and education institutions.

Graduate Medical Education Program & Outcomes Research
In fall of 2002, Standard Process became the first nutritional products company to sponsor a graduate medical education program in the dietary supplement industry with our naturopathic clinical residency program. In this program, qualified naturopathic graduates from accredited naturopathic medical schools rotate through conventional and alternative medical facilities in southeastern Wisconsin. The residents define, develop, and implement research protocols to answer important questions about the efficacy of natural products in the prevention and treatment of disease.

The development of the graduate medical education program allows us to utilize outcomes research to evaluate the effectiveness of Standard Process products in large populations of patients. One example of the use of outcomes research is the Standard Process Health and Wellness Outcomes Study. This study evaluates the impact of Standard Process' Corporate Wellness Program on the health and productivity of employee volunteers. Employee volunteers are examined by the naturopathic doctors, participate in health screenings, receive lifestyle and fitness counseling, and commit to a protocol of Standard Process supplements. In the future, we hope to extend our graduate medical education program to include other health care professionals.

The Standard Process Research and Development department works to provide health care professionals with a solid scientific basis for the safe and effective use of high-quality whole foods, herbs, and other natural products so that we can meet our mission of providing the safest, most effective, highest quality products.
